If you are interested in reading books similar to Harry Potter, there are a few options available to you. These include His Dark Materials, Mildred Hubble and Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches, and Lockwood & Co.
His Dark Materials
If you are a Harry Potter fan, you may have heard of His Dark Materials. This fantasy novel series is a trilogy written by Philip Pullman. The books are full of mind-bending twists, magic and adventure.
“His Dark Materials” tells the story of Lyra Belacqua. She is an orphan who lives in an Oxford college. She is accompanied by Pantalaimon (voiced by Kit Cooper).
Like Harry Potter, the series is set in a magical setting within a realistic world. However, there is much more to it than magic.
His Dark Materials explores the power of “authority” and the nature of good and evil. It also features religious symbolism. Unlike the Potter series, it is not shy about its criticism of organized religion.
Lockwood & Co.
Lockwood & Co is an outlaw ghost-hunting agency run by two teen boys and a young woman with psychic abilities. The group fights deadly ghosts and spirits in London.
It’s based on a book series written by Jonathan Stroud. He wrote the Bartimaeus Sequence novels, which sold over 6 million copies worldwide.
The show follows the misadventures of three teenagers, Anthony Lockwood, George Cubbins, and Lucy Carlyle. Together, they are able to find solutions to mysteries that threaten humanity. But they face fierce competition from rival ghost-hunting agencies.
In order to get to the bottom of a mysterious case, Lockwood and his team discover that they have to battle against an evil undead spirit. Eventually, they uncover a mystery that will change the course of human history.
Dungeon Academy
If you love the Harry Potter books, then you will definitely enjoy these similar books, which take the world of wizards and monsters to a whole new level. These books have many elements that are similar to Harry Potter, including magic, coming of age themes, and high adventure.
There are four series that you should check out. The first one is the Keeper of the Lost Cities. It’s a series of nine novels that will appeal to readers who like Harry Potter. This series features characters such as Quentin Coldwater, who is obsessed with Fillory, a fantasy world that he has been told is real.
Alina Starkov is an orphan and is being tested for magic. Her powers may be the solution to wars in her nation.
Mildred Hubble and Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches
Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches is a fictional school where witches and magic lovers gather. They are headed by the benevolent headmistress, Miss Cackle. However, the school’s leadership seems unstable. And a young witch, Mildred Hubble, becomes a target.
At the beginning of the school year, the new students arrive on flying broomsticks. It’s only after the first few months of the year that they are given their black kittens.
Mildred Hubble is a young witch who has just arrived at Cackle’s. She lives in a tiny flat with her mother, Julie. Her mother has recently become the art teacher at the school.
In her first term at Cackle’s, Mildred is considered the worst student in the school. Eventually, she makes the decision to leave the academy. As a result, she is sent to Miss Cackle’s office. While there, she accidentally slips a story about a teacher turning a student into a frog. Rather than denying this claim, Miss Cackle calls Mildred “the worst witch.”
In her second year at Cackle’s, Mildred makes friends with Maud Spellbody and Enid Nightshade. But Ethel Hallow is a rival.
Alina Starkov
If you love Harry Potter, then you’ll be a fan of Alina Starkov books. She’s a girl who discovers the power of summoning light. Her story is a bit different than Harry’s, though.
In the Grisha world, Alina is a part of the magical elite. She is taught to perform feats of magic as part of the ancient elite.
It’s a long story, but she isn’t quite a wizard. Instead, she’s a young woman with a scar on her right palm and a mysterious power.
When her regiment is attacked by a shadowy figure in the shadow fold, a dormant power awakens in Alina. Using this power, she’s able to protect her friend.
Golden Compass
One of the most successful fantasy blockbusters of the 2000s is The Golden Compass. It was written by Philip Pullman and based on his novel His Dark Materials. However, this doesn’t mean that the movie is perfect.
Instead of being a direct adaptation, The Golden Compass is more of a mashup of other fantasy works. For example, it includes references to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. But it doesn’t offer the emotional catharsis that fans of those series were looking for.
Also, The Golden Compass fails to do anything really new. Compared to New Line Cinema’s own fantasy series, it lacks in character development and action.
